Maerl is a slow-growing, pink coralline red algae that forms delicate, twig-like nodules on the seabed around the west coast of Scotland. It grows about a millimetre a year. Over centuries those little twiglets build deep pink beds that become a nursery for scallops, crabs, cod and hundreds of other species. It is often called Scotland's coral. It is beautiful, fragile, and under real threat from bottom trawling and pollution.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThese hand-poured Maerl Melts are my little nod to it.
