I first fell in love with maerl doing my masters up in Orkney. Since moving home to Coigach I have been out with local marine groups helping monitor this incredible habitat, and if I was going to do wax melts I wanted to make a melt that was properly me. These are it.
What is maerl? It is not coral, and it is not seaweed as you know it. Maerl is a slow-growing, pink coralline red algae that forms delicate, twig-like nodules on the seabed around the west coast of Scotland. It grows about a millimetre a year. Over centuries those little twiglets build deep pink beds that become a nursery for scallops, crabs, cod and hundreds of other species. It is often called Scotland's coral. It is beautiful, fragile, and under real threat from bottom trawling and pollution.
These hand-poured Maerl Melts are my little nod to it. Each twiglet is shaped by hand, no two are exactly alike, just like the real thing.
